Listening to music

A year ago, Voldemort announced that he didn’t love me anymore and just wanted to run away.  If my life were a musical, the lights would have dimmed, a spotlight would have clicked on, and Adele would have stepped out of the wings belting out “Rolling In The Deep.”

That song played on an almost endless loop in my head for months.  These lyrics, especially, repeated:

“There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, it’s bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ‘head and sell me out and I’ll lay your shit bare”

And…

“The scars of your love they leave me breathless”

I love Adele.  I love that she’s zaftig, retro, and beautiful.  She’s confident.  She’s talented.  And, good grief, she’s wise beyond her years.

As time passed, I reached a point where the soundtrack of my life changed.  Now the song that plays in my head is “Home” by Phillip Phillips:

“Settle down, it’ll all be clear
Don’t pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found.”

It’s comforting.  Encouraging.  And less angry.  So maybe I’m making some progress.

But, of course every now and then, a pirate radio station breaks into my head and I hear Gotya’s “Somebody That I Used to Know”:

“Told myself that you were right for me,
But felt so lonely in your company…

But I’ll admit that I was glad that it was over.

Now you’re just somebody that I used to know.

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I’d done
And I don’t wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know.”
